Data Mining the Amazon, 2003

In my book Data Mining the Amazon, I catalogued Amazon.com CD suggestions tied to books recommended by shoppers who self-identified politically as conservative or liberal. I clicked through all the web pages and pasted the data manually into a spreadsheet. I published my final analysis in the style of an annual report with charts and information graphics.

The Beatles and Bob Dylan were favorites of conservatives and liberals, respectively, but the opposing signifiers had disappointingly similar lists. I suspect Amazon.com’s marketing interests skewed the results. Nevertheless, my book emphasized how self-identification in research subjects is an unstable concept and an unreliable predictor of musical taste.
